Givry is one of the lesser-known areas of Burgundy and although it has no Grand Cru vineyards, it does sport a number of premier Cru vineyards that cover about a sixth of its total area; today’s offer comes from one of these vineyards which are considered to be the best in the region. The specific vineyard, Clos Jus, has a history dating back to the 13th century but it had fallen out of use by the start of the 20th. In 1990 it was cleared and replanted by a small group of producers, including Domaine Mouton, who could see the potential in the terroir. Today, it is producing some of the top wines in Givry.
Laurent Mouton has been in charge of Domaine Mouton since 2002, the fourth generation of his family to make wine in Givry. With just 12 hectares of vineyards, he makes delicious wines that are full of sappy red fruit with a silky intensity on the palate. His Clos Jus is fresh and juicy with a distinct streak of minerality. It is drinking perfectly well now but has the concentration and fruit to improve over the next couple of years.
